{"id":469900,"date":"2023-03-20T10:05:58","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T14:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/?post_type=interactive&#038;p=469900"},"modified":"2025-08-12T10:17:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T14:17:32","slug":"mental-health-and-substance-use-state-fact-sheets","status":"publish","type":"interactive","link":"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/interactive\/mental-health-and-substance-use-state-fact-sheets\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health and Substance Use State Fact Sheets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: These state fact sheets were updated on March 20, 2023 to incorporate the latest available data.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, many people have experienced poor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-reform\/issue-brief\/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use\/\">mental health<\/a>, with over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/adults-reporting-symptoms-of-anxiety-or-depressive-disorder-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\">30%<\/a>\u00a0of adults in the United States reporting symptoms of anxiety and\/or depression in February 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/policy-watch\/substance-use-issues-are-worsening-alongside-access-to-care\/\">Substance use<\/a> and death rates due to substances have also worsened in the U.S. \u2013 drug overdose\u00a0death rates increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/drug-overdose-death-rate-per-100000-population\/\">50%<\/a> from 2019 to 2021 (21.6 vs. 32.4 per 100,000), primarily driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-reform\/issue-brief\/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use\/\">fentanyl<\/a>. Further, after a brief period of decline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/suicide-rate-by-gender\/\">suicide death rates<\/a> increased in 2021 but remained just below the peak death rate in 2018 (14.1 vs. 14.2 per 100,000). Increases in drug overdose deaths and suicide deaths have disproportionately affected many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/issue-brief\/five-key-findings-on-mental-health-and-substance-use-disorders-by-race-ethnicity\/\">people of color<\/a>. Negative mental health and substance use outcomes have also affected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/issue-brief\/recent-trends-in-mental-health-and-substance-use-concerns-among-adolescents\/\">youth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-reform\/issue-brief\/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use\/\">young adults<\/a>. This increase in mental health and substance use issues comes at a time when resources are already strained, and people with mental health diagnoses often face barriers to care. Among adults with symptoms of anxiety and\/or depressive disorder in 2022, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/unmet-need-for-counseling-or-therapy-among-adults-reporting-symptoms-of-anxiety-and-or-depressive-disorder-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\">20%<\/a>\u00a0report needing, but not receiving, mental health counseling or therapy.<\/p>\n<p>In the state fact sheets below, we examine state and national-level data on mental health and substance use.
